The March 2025 edition of the Scottish Clan Connection newsletter explores critical clan heritage projects, historical revelations, and preservation efforts. Leading this issue is the ongoing restoration of Caerlaverock Castle, a unique triangular fortress built by the Maxwell family in the 1270s. Historic Environment Scotland has initiated crucial work to stabilize its staircases and northwest tower, ensuring its survival for future generations. Visitors can still explore the castle grounds and participate in heritage-themed activities during the renovations.
A remarkable discovery has surfaced regarding Clan Lyon and Glamis Castle, where researchers uncovered a lost 55-note fragment of a pre-Reformation hymn, Cultor Dei, within the Aberdeen Breviary, Scotland’s first full-length printed book. The finding, preserved at the National Library of Scotland, challenges previous assumptions about Scotland’s sacred musical tradition.
The edition also highlights a major digital preservation project at Kellie Castle, where state-of-the-art 3D laser scanning is documenting the site’s intricate plaster ceilings. Built in the 12th century and later owned by the Erskines, the castle’s history is now more accessible, enhancing visitor engagement and long-term conservation efforts.
Other features include the legendary MacNab-MacNeish feud, a deep dive into Comlongon Castle’s turbulent past, and a look at Alexander Ranaldson MacDonell of Glengarry, a fierce Highland nationalist and defender of Scottish tradition. The newsletter concludes with a chilling tale of the Banshee of Dunollie Castle, whose sorrowful wail is said to foretell death within the MacDougall family.
From clan warfare to ancient manuscripts, this issue celebrates Scotland’s enduring legacy while shedding light on newly uncovered historical treasures.

I cannot get to the newsletter. I’ve been able to download previous newsletters but not this month’s. Am I missing something?
